Nigerian govt accuses Peter Obi, Datti-Ahmed of treason

Nigerian govt accuses Peter Obi, Datti-Ahmed of treason

“Obi and his Vice, Datti-Ahmed cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is sworn in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria. This is treason."

The Nigerian government has accused a major opposition group leader of treason, weeks after the candidate of the ruling party won a hotly contested presidential election.

Government spokesperson Lai Mohammed gave the government’s position during engagements with journalists in Washington DC in the United States.

Mr Mohammed, who is the information minister of the outgoing government, accused the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, of inciting people to violence over the outcome of the presidential elections, saying it is treasonable.

Mr Obi came third in the 25 February presidential election won by Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC. Mr Obi and Atiku Abubakar who came second are, however, challenging the results of the election in court, saying the election and result collation was flawed. Both men have publicly called on their supporters to refrain from violence while they challenge the results in court.

The Allegation

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Mohammed is in Washington to engage with international media organisations and Think-tanks on the just concluded 2023 polls.

It also reports that the minister had so far engaged respectively with the “Washington Post”, Voice of America, Associated Press and Foreign Policy Magazine.

During the respective interactions with the media organisations, the minister said it was wrong for Mr Obi on one breadth to seek redress in court over the outcome of the polls and on another breadth incite people to violence.

“Obi and his Vice, Datti-Ahmed cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is sworn in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria.

“This is treason. You cannot be inviting insurrection, and this is what they are doing.

“Obi’s statement is that of a desperate person, he is not a democrat that he claimed to be.

“A democrat should not believe in democracy only when he wins election,” he said.

The minister said in challenging the election results, there was no pathway to victory for either Mr Obi or Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the minister, both Messrs Obi and Atiku failed to meet the constitutional requirements to be declared as president.

“The constitution has stringent criteria for anybody who wants to be president of the country.

“Not only must he have the plurality of votes cast in an election, he must also have scored one-quarter of votes cast in at least 25 states.

“Only the president-elect met the criteria by scoring 8.79 million votes and having one-quarter of all the vote cast in 29 states of the federation,” he said.

The minister said Atiku came second with 6.9 million votes but was only able to make one-quarter of the votes cast in 21 states.

He said Mr Obi came third with 5.8 million votes but won only one-quarter of the votes cast in 15 states.

“You cannot win an election in a poll where you came a distant third position and failed to meet constitutional requirements.

“Peter Obi, while complaining of fraud, has not disowned his victory in Lagos,” he said.

Messrs Obi and Atiku are currently in court to challenge the results of the 25 February presidential election.

Elaborating on his mission to the U.S., Mr Mohammed said he was there to correct the negative narratives being promoted by naysayers and opposition to the election.

He said the opposition, having lost in the election, was alleging fraud, calling for its cancellation and constitution of an interim government.

“We have come here to balance that skewed narratives and to tell the world unambiguously that the just concluded general elections in Nigeria are the fairest, most transparent and authentic in the history of Nigeria.

“The election is the most fair and credible because of the introduction of Bimodal Voters Verification System (BVAS) which I regard as a game changer.

“BVAS technology had helped to weed out ghost and illegal voters, eliminate multiple voting and return sanity to the elections,” Mr Mohammed said.

Relying on the INEC report, the minister said BVAS, during the polls, worked 97 per cent giving unparalleled credibility to the elections.

UPDATED: Police arrest portable, to spend 72 hours in detention

UPDATED: Police arrest portable, to spend 72 hours in detention

“I was lured here; they want to kill me; what have I done? I never knew those people were police officers.”

Following the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum given to the famous singer Habeeb Okikiola, commonly called Portable, to turn himself in, the Ogun State police command arrested him for refusing to honour the invitation.

Early on Tuesday, two videos of the musician raining curses and rough-handling some men of the Nigeria police surfaced on the internet.

Displeased by the conduct of Mr Okikiola toward the officers, the police gave a 72-hour ultimatum to the singer, a request that should elapse today, Friday.

The police who condemned the singer’s actions also threatened to prosecute him.

In the two videos, Portable claimed that an internet fraudster had brought the police to his bar to arrest staff members “for no reason.”

But the police noted that it acted on a petition.

When contacted over the phone on Friday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed that the singer had been arrested and currently cooling his feet at the state headquarters of the police in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Serial offender

Mr Oyeyemi further said they arrested Zazu crooner after he refused to honour five invitations.

JOE CORSS TV has also gathered that the singer will remain in police custody till Monday when he will appear in court.

When Portable arrived at the police headquarters, he said, ”Zazu biza biza, I am portable, a federal government property. Akoi Tinubu, Akoi APC.”

Just as the reporter attempted to speak to the controversial artiste, police officers summoned him into the Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba’s office.

Portable, who was cheerful while going toward the Commissioner of Police’s office, appeared remorseful and almost cried as he made his way out of the office.

He refused to speak with journalists but was overheard saying in Yoruba, “ I was lured here, they want to kill me, what have I done? I never knew those people were police officers.”

Addressing journalists in Eleweran, Mr Abimbola advised up-and-coming artistes to be humble and law-abiding.

He said, “Portable has been arrested; there is a petition against him from a Nigerian studio owner. Portable destroyed the man’s studio and still ordered his boys to beat up the owner. He was beaten black and blue, and that was the basis of the petition in the first instance.

“To this end, an invitation letter was sent to him, not once, not twice, not three times, but he refused to honour the invitation. When he refused to honour the invitation, police officers were sent to effect his arrest, and on getting there, he assaulted the officers. But today, he has been arrested, he is with us, an investigation has commenced, and as soon as we conclude our study, he will be charged to court any moment.

“That you are an artiste or a star does not make you above the law. Nobody is above the law, and the law is no respecter of anybody. If you are an artist, if you are a celebrity or a star of any kind, you must operate within the ambit of the law, and the law will protect you, but when you take impunity as one of the characteristics of being a celebrity, you will have the law enforcement agency to contend with.”

Why I beat man who brought police to arrest me – Portable

JOE CORSS TV BLOG

Why I beat man who brought police to arrest me – Portable

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has opened up about what transpired between him and an alleged internet fraudster who brought the police to arrest him recently.

Recall that the ‘Zazoo’ crooner made headlines after he was captured in a viral video lambasting some officers who stormed his bar in the Sanga Ota area of Ogun State to arrest him.
The singer resisted arrest, boasting that he was a superstar and worked for the ruling party. And consequently, the Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday gave him a 72-hour ultimatum to report himself to the nearest police station before Friday or prepare for arrest.
However, in a new video shared on his Tiktok page, Portable maintained that what transpired between him and the complainant was none of the police’s business.
He explained that the petitioner was his apprentice and was into internet fraud against his advice.
He said he disciplined the ex-worker after he refused to change his ways and sacked him.
Portable added that the ex-worker went to the police station and filed a case of assault against him for merely correcting him.
Speaking in a mix of Pidgin English and Yoruba, the singer said, “That boy wey I beat, he’s my boy. I’m a boss to him. Oga go beat apprentice na? That one no mean say make Police come say make dem come arrest you.’’
“This boy is my boy. He’s into Yahoo [Internet fraud]. I advised him to quit but he still dey do the scam dey go. Then I pursued him. I beat him. I flogged him. Now you want to arrest me because of I flogged him? He come to write a petition about me, about a celebrity superstar. He’s a Yahoo boy. Yahoo boy came to lay a complaint. He write petition about superstar celebrity. My work is legit. I do music for a living. I no fear anybody, na only God I fear,” he added.

UPDATED: Court grants INEC permission to reconfigure BVAS machines

But INEC subsequently filed an ex parte application on 4 March urging the Court of Appeal to vary the ex parte order made in favour of the PDP and the Labour Party candidates.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that INEC asked the court to vary the order to allow it to reconfigure the BVAS machines for the 11 March governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

INEC’s lawyer, Tanimu Inuwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the application became necessary following an order restraining it from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the due inspection was conducted and Certified.

He added that the commission would require sufficient time to reconfigure the BVAS needed to conduct the election that would take place on Saturday.

He told the court that INEC would upload from the back end.

‘BVAS data won’t be lost’

In a filing dated 6 March, INEC’s deputy director, ICT department, Lawrence Bayode, said “there is the need for reconfiguration of the BVAS devices” for the state governorship and House of Assembly election.

Mr Bayode explained that “the reconfiguration of the BVAS devices entails purging the accreditation data on the BVAS devices.”

But he clarified that “before the purging is approved by the BVAS devices, the data on the BVAS devices have to be uploaded to the accreditation backend server.”

The INEC IT expert further noted that “the accreditation data on the BVAS devices cannot be tampered with and/or lost during upload to the accreditation backend server.”

INEC has said 176,000 BVAS machines will be deployed for the Saturday polls.

Counter-argument

In his argument, counsel for Mr Obi, Onyechi Ikpeazu, a SAN, prayed the court not to grant INEC’s application which he said would mean losing the data they were interested in.

” All we are seeking is for a physical inspection of the BVAS so that the evidence is obtained before it will be configured,” he told the court.

He, therefore, opposed the INEC’s application and urged the court not to grant it.

Mr Obi arrived at the Court at about 1:35 p.m . in company with the Labour Party national chairman, Julius Abure, and senator-elect, Victor Umeh.

The former Anambra State governor who came third in the results of the presidential election announced by INEC had announced his decision to challenge the outcome of the poll in court.
